Working out the best outfit to wear while trekking through the dry landscape of Kakadu can make your journey a lot easier. With a lot of visitors simply trekking out in unsuitable attire and being met with blisters, sunburn, overheating, and more! Follow our list for what to wear while hiking to the best attractions Kakadu has to offer!
Shoes
Walking is an unavoidable task in Kakadu National Park, with a limitation on roads at the big natural attractions. No matter if you opt to do a mostly scenic drive, at least a couple of hours of walking will be involved. Making sure you wear a good pair of walking shoes is an essential tip, with uncomfortable shoes that can’t handle rocky terrain, thick sand, or steep heights is asking for a disaster. We suggest opting for runners, walking sandals, or even hiking shoes if you are going rougher. Making sure you wear in these shoes is also suggested, as Kakadu’s amazing waterfalls, lookout points, and historic artefacts won’t nearly be as good seeing with a series of painful blisters distracting you.
Clothes
Kakadu is known for its ever-changing weather, with the Indigenous people saying there are six different seasons year-round. Therefore making sure you look up the weather prior to packing will help you grab the right gear for your journey. If its on the hotter side, lightweight gear such as t-shirts, pants, or shorts will work best. Whereas if on the colder side, a thick jacket and even a raincoat are recommended. Especially if you are planning on camping in night, as even in the hotter months, Kakadu can get quite cold after dusk.
Sun Gear
No matter what time of year it is, you are likely to get sunburnt while trekking about the dry terrain. Making sure you follow the classic Australian phrase ‘slip, slop, slap’ which translates to slipping on a t-shirt, slopping on some sunscreen, and slipping on a hat, you should be fine while trekking about.
Food and Drinks
Drinking water is essential when you spend a day in Kakadu, as trekking about the rough terrain can be hard for anyone. Making sure to bring a backpack or travel bag with a large water bottle is essential, as it can help with the beaming sun and hard walking trails you will be met with throughout the day. Even bringing a couple of easy snacks is a good idea, such as nut bars or fruit, but make sure you don’t leave behind any wrappings or leftover food for the animals to discover.
