Everybody knows that Aussies cannot go past a snag cooked on the barbie, some vegemite lightly spread over toast, or a cheeky lamington after a meal.
These are all stereotypical Aussie foods, which you will probably find in almost all households.
The cultural diversity within Australia promotes all types of international cuisine’s
If there is one thing that Australia is not known for, it is most likely its food. Unlike many countries where food is sometimes the most important part of their culture and historical recipes are passed on for hundreds of generations, Australia is a relatively young country, and they have not yet had the chance to create these traditional dishes that places such as France, Italy, and Mexico for example. Australians do love to eat though and that is shown in the number of restaurants and dining venues there are throughout the country. A large majority of these cuisines are sourced from other countries and due to the diversity of Australia, there are many popular foods and dishes which have originated from all across the world!
A lot of popular Australian food has roots in the United Kingdom
Australia is a part of the Commonwealth and has always been under the rule of the British Monarchy, with its first non-indigenous settlers coming from the UK, therefore a lot of their influence is based around the English culture. For example, the drink of English Breakfast tea is immensely popular in Australia, as our ancestors would have brought that with them when they arrived here just over 200 years ago. The typical Sunday Roast is another tradition that was brought to Australia and has remained since. A classic roast meat meal of Lamb or Beef served with roast vegetables, gravy, and just about anything you wish is a super popular tradition in Australia.
The most well-known Australian food is definitely Vegemite
The reason why Vegemite is the most popular food in Australia is quite possibly because it is the most unusual. There are similar spreads in England, however, there is nothing else like it anywhere else in the world. Those who visit from overseas are often disgusted by the taste of vegemite and struggle to see the appeal. However, as Australians, we are given vegemite from a young age on toast, and have come to enjoy this intriguing flavoured spread, which to many Australians, tastes just like home!
