Travel is a gift, so when your travel itinerary also involves planning around a Birthday I feel somewhat blessed to ensure that the whole experience of the family member celebrating gets a little extra on their special day.
All of us at some stage in our travelling journey have been able to celebrate a birthday overseas. Mr OFT has had a birthday in New Zealand, Jude celebrated last year in style waking up to his 11th year on the Isle of Skye and Miranda was serenaded with an Italian “Tanti Aguiri” when she had her first overseas trip and turned three. Each time we have ensured that there is still fanfare, a cake even if it is bought from a milk bar and gifts of experience are given instead of wrapped gifts.
We love looking back at photos of remembering at the next birthday “where was I last year….oh yes, that’s right I was in another country or another town..” It’s a wonderful way to mark a very special day for all of us.
The above images are from 2015 – we were in a small farm stay on the outskirts of Lucca, Italy for my 33rd Birthday. It was the peak of the Italian Summer, we had a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment, a fridge stocked full of food and luscious grounds to roam around when we weren’t poolside in what was the biggest pool I have ever seen (and just a side note – how nice does it look?). I was spoilt with summer fruit in bed (having never had a nectarine or peach on my birthday before!), coffee and a relaxing day. In the evening the family had arranged for private cooking experience with the owner in the manor house. It was sensational!
And the best bit is, this upcoming trip it’s my turn to celebrate a Birthday whilst travelling…AGAIN!
I’m thrilled. As a July baby, the Winter Birthday is going to be traded in for a Mediterranean one.
So where will I be? POSITANO! We have a few nights booked into a quaint hotel and we cannot wait to explore the Amalfi Coast this year.
Have you celebrated a birthday whilst travelling? How did you mark the occasion?
